It’s time for the Movie Minute with Matinee Matt. This week’s flick? The Odyssey.

Who would have guessed a story most of us first met in high school English class would become one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the summer?

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is undeniably ambitious, bringing Homer’s epic poem to the big screen with staggering scale and real emotional intensity. Across nearly three hours, Matt Damon’s Odysseus is put through a mythic gauntlet of monsters, gods, and trials.

Nolan’s commitment to practical effects and doing things in camera pays off in a way that feels almost documentary-like at times, especially in the nautical sequences. This is the kind of spectacle that demands IMAX, and if you’re lucky enough to be near one of the IMAX 70 millimeter locations, even better. In non-IMAX formats, you’re losing roughly 40 percent of the picture.

The stacked cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron, while Anne Hathaway and Samantha Morton stand out in smaller but memorable roles. The acting is rock solid, and paired with a stirring score and expert cinematography, it’s easy to get swept up in a story where you already know the ending.

With thrilling action and riveting drama, The Odyssey is masterful — an instant classic. Five out of five stars..
