Paramount Pictures will re-release Top Gun in IMAX and other premium formats for its 40th anniversary, beginning May 13th for one week only. The 1986 Tom Cruise blockbuster will be paired with 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick in a double feature presentation. This marks the first time the original film appears in IMAX, D-BOX, 4DX, and ScreenX formats, plus Dolby Cinema. Opening day features a free collector’s print during the Top Gun Day kickoff event. Directed by Tony Scott, the original film earned $353.8 million globally against a $15 million budget. Cruise starred as pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell alongside Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis, and Val Kilmer. The sequel generated $1.5 billion worldwide, becoming Cruise’s highest-grossing film and receiving six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.
