Getting a call from the principal’s office is every parent’s nightmare, but one dad says he ended up feeling proud instead of panicked. When TikTok creator Gabe was told his 10-year-old daughter had hit another student, he rushed to school expecting the worst. But after hearing her side of the story and reviewing surveillance footage, he discovered she had been cornered and shoved to the ground by a boy who had been bullying her and her friends. According to Gabe, his daughter grabbed a rock, threw it at the boy, and ran away to safety. The school reportedly wanted to discipline both students, saying their policy was to penalize “both parties.”

But Gabe defended his daughter, arguing she had acted in self-defense. At the end of it all, his daughter was not disciplined and even received a written apology. As Gabe ended his clip, “I will never teach her to start a fight. But I will damn sure make sure she finishes them.”

The story has sparked a debate online about bullying and zero-tolerance policies at school.

SIDE 1: Supporting the Dad

  • It appears to be self-defense. According to the surveillance footage, the girl was allegedly chased, cornered, and shoved before throwing the rock. Many would argue she had the right to protect herself when an adult wasn’t immediately available to help.
  • The school’s supervision may have failed. The father argued that the bigger issue was that a child was allegedly being bullied and cornered on the playground without intervention from staff.
  • Zero-tolerance policies can be unfair. Critics say punishing both parties regardless of circumstances can discourage victims from defending themselves or reporting incidents.
  • Her record shouldn’t be damaged for reacting to an attack. Supporters would argue that disciplinary action should focus on the aggressor, not the child who was trying to escape the situation.

SIDE 2: Supporting the School

  • Throwing a rock can cause serious injury. Even if she felt threatened, a rock to the face could have resulted in significant harm, so schools may feel they must address that behavior.
  • Zero tolerance policies exist for a reason: Schools often use broad policies because administrators don’t want to appear to be making exceptions based on subjective interpretations of events.
  • Students shouldn’t be encouraged to retaliate. Some would argue that self-defense should be a last resort and that children should seek help from an adult whenever possible.
  • Schools face liability concerns. Administrators may worry that failing to discipline any physical response could create confusion about what level of force is acceptable on campus.
