The Town of Cohutta announced Saturday that Mayor Ron Shinnick has resigned from office, effective immediately.

According to town officials, Shinnick submitted a formal letter of resignation dated May 15, 2026, to City Attorney Bryan Rayburn. The town said the resignation has been officially acknowledged in accordance with the town charter and state law.

Town leaders say the Cohutta Town Council will now begin filling the vacancy, including appointing an interim mayor.

Officials also announced plans to hold an emergency Town Council meeting at 6:00pm on Wednesday, May 20, at Cohutta Town Hall to discuss the transition process and next steps.

Shinnick’s resignation follows the recent removal and reinstatement of the Cohutta Police Department earlier this month.
