On this day (May 6th) in 1937, the German blimp Hindenburg exploded as it was attempting to dock in Lakehurst, New Jersey. 36 people were killed in the tragedy. The fiery disaster was captured on film and on the radio by broadcaster Herbert Morrison, whose emotional eyewitness report produced the infamous line, “Oh the humanity.”
