Controversial Fuhrman, who was one of the first police at the murder scene at the Simpson estate, has written a book in which he blames police bungling for losing major pieces of evidence that would have convicted O.J. Simpson of the murder of his ex-wife and her friend. USA

Mark Fuhrman, the former Los Angeles police detective whose role in the O.J. Simpson murder investigation made him one of the most recognizable and polarizing figures in modern criminal justice history, has died at 74.

Fuhrman was among the first detectives to investigate the 1994 killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman and found a bloody glove later central to the prosecution’s case. But his credibility collapsed during Simpson’s 1995 trial after recordings surfaced of him using racist language, contradicting his sworn testimony.

He later pleaded no contest to perjury, becoming the only person convicted in connection with the case.

After leaving the LAPD, Fuhrman moved to Idaho, where he became an author and media commentator. His cause of death was not disclosed.
