The bird, known for its large, brightly colored bill, had been on the run in Las Vegas for months. His name is Sam and he is now finally safe after wandering into a homeowner’s garage. Residents immediately recognized him from news reports and called Southwest Exotic Avian Rescue.

Sam was picked up and taken to a veterinarian, where rescuers noted he had a chipped beak and some missing feathers — signs he’d had a rough time surviving in the desert. Despite that, he’s in surprisingly good shape for a tropical bird living far from the humid climate he needs. Rescuers say toucans require very specific care, even down to avoiding tap water because of iron buildup. Sam will stay in quarantine while vets run tests to make sure he’s healthy.
