Georgia Town Reinstates Police Department Days After Mayor Fired Everyone

Cohutta’s town council passed an ordinance Friday restoring the police department and reinstating all officers, two days after Mayor Ron Shinnick fired the entire force. The mayor terminated the chief and about 10 officers Wednesday morning, citing social media comments by officers. Former Sergeant Jeremy May said the incident stemmed from complaints he and colleagues raised about the mayor’s wife, Pam Shinnick, who served as town clerk. “This all comes to personal vendetta from the mayor,” May told WRCB-TV. The town attorney informed council members the firings violated the town charter, which requires 30 days’ notice before removing employees. Vice Mayor Kornberg led the meeting after Shinnick voluntarily left. Council members also passed a measure preventing the mayor from firing officers for 30 days and tabled agenda items involving Shinnick’s removal. Story URL
