Two live explosive devices, including a World War II-era grenade, were discovered by a North Carolina family clearing out a deceased relative’s residence. Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded February 26th after receiving reports about the findings. Officials identified the weapons as a smoke grenade and an MK2 grenade. “Both devices appeared to be live but in stable condition,” authorities stated. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Bomb Squad secured the scene and safely removed both explosives for proper disposal. “No other devices were located, and no charges are expected at this time,” the sheriff’s office confirmed. The MK2 grenade, nicknamed the “pineapple grenade” for its distinctive segmented design, was widely used by U.S. forces during World War II, Korea, and early Vietnam conflicts. How the explosives came to be at the property remains unknown.
