A U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base in California on Monday, killing all eight people aboard, military officials said. The aircraft was conducting a routine test mission when it went down around 11:20 a.m. local time.

The bomber was assigned to the base’s 412th Test Wing and was participating in a radar modernization program. The crew included military personnel, government civilians and contractors. Two of the victims were employees of Boeing, the company confirmed.

Emergency crews responded to the crash site, and the airfield was temporarily closed as officials began recovery efforts. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
