Woman Dies After Falling Into Open Manhattan Manhole Near Cartier Store

A 56-year-old woman died Monday night after stepping out of her Mercedes-Benz SUV and falling into an uncovered manhole on Fifth Avenue near a Cartier store. Police responding to a 911 call found the woman approximately 10 feet down in the utility opening. Emergency medical services transported her to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity. Con Edison confirmed they are “actively investigating” the circumstances, including why the manhole cover was missing.
