Looking for a project to do during the pandemic, Kyle Seeber and their father decided to create a free book library—the Little Purple Book Library.

The Nashville Public Library is helping people in the community rescue their family histories from obsolete technology with its new “Memory Lab.”

The library set up a space that gives visitors free access to a computer system that converts old VHS tapes, BetaMax cassettes, photos, slides, and film negatives into modern digital files.

They point out that commercial services might charge $30 per tape and $1 per image — which could really add up for most people trying to preserve their memories. But thanks to this Memory Lab, Nashville residents can now book up to four hours of lab time without spending a dime.

And while this is a high-tech setup with different gadgets getting the job done, the real impact is very personal. As the library explained, “The most rewarding part is yet to come — all of the stories, memories, and history that will be given new life and preserved for the next generation.”
