Sam Neill, the beloved actor best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died at age 78. He passed away Monday in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by family. His family confirmed the news on Instagram, describing the loss as “sudden and unexpected,” but noting Neill remained cancer-free at the time of his death. Neill had previously battled stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, diagnosed after filming Jurassic World Dominion in 2022. In April, he had declared himself cancer-free. Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Neill’s career spanned more than 50 years, including acclaimed roles in The Piano and The Hunt for Red October. Steven Spielberg called Neill “exceptionally collaborative,” noting it was “a stretch for him to play a character who acted as though children were messy and smelly because this was the opposite of the loving father he was.” Story URL
