Brenda Fricker, the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award, died Thursday in Dublin at 81. Her agent Phil Belfield confirmed the news to the BBC, saying, “We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her.” Fricker earned her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress playing devoted mother Bridget Brown in 1989’s My Left Foot opposite Daniel Day-Lewis. During her acceptance speech, she memorably dedicated her award to the woman she portrayed, saying: “Anybody who gives birth 22 times deserves one of these.” She was equally beloved as the kind-hearted Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York in 1992. Born February 17, 1945, in Dublin, Fricker also had a celebrated stage career and was ranked 26th on the Irish Times’ greatest Irish film actors list in 2020. Story URL
