It’s best to keep moving if you can. A review of data from 15 different studies of people ages 18 and up finds those who met recommended physical activity levels were about 25 percent less likely to experience symptoms of depression. However, participating in more physical activity, beyond recommended levels, appeared to have “diminishing potential benefits.” Study co-author James Woodcock says, “Any exercise is good, even a few minutes walking per day might help. The best exercise is going to be the one you actually do.” The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 21 million adults in the US will experience at least one depressive episode in their lifetimes.
