Nearly half of young people believe becoming a tradesperson offers a quicker path to earning $100,000 than attending college. A survey of 2,000 adults under 28 found only 19% think choosing university over apprenticeships was wise. Key motivators include avoiding student debt (34%) and starting to earn money sooner (32%). Over half (53%) believe trade careers enable faster homeownership compared to university graduates. The study shows 34% have considered switching industries to become tradespeople, with men (46%) more likely than women (28%). Popular trade choices include painting and decorating (32%), electrical work (20%), and landscaping (20%). Young people cite hands-on work preferences (25%), better work-life balance (33%), and pride in creating or fixing things (26%) as appealing factors. 29% of current university students would change their higher education decision if possible.
