Louisiana Gets Wild

There was unexpected sight on a road in northwest Louisiana last week — not a deer, not a cow, but a massive African antelope wandering along a rural road.
A real estate agent driving through Plain Dealing on the way to a house she is showing spotted the animal crossing the street near a herd of cattle. At first, she thought it might be a bull — but it turned out to be an eland, one of the largest antelope species in the world, weighing up to about 1,100 pounds. She says the animal didn’t seem frightened — just calm and a little confused about its surroundings.
Where it came from is still unknown. Some locals believe it may have escaped from a nearby game park, but officials haven’t confirmed that, and the animal is reportedly still on the loose. For now, it’s a bit of an African mystery in the Louisiana woods. (UPI)
