A Florida man is facing federal charges after prosecutors say he pulled off a year‑long scheme to steal more than $600,000 worth of onions and potatoes from produce companies.

Federal authorities say 39‑year‑old Jason Canals used fake company identities and falsified documents to order large shipments of onions and potatoes. Once the trucks were on the road, he allegedly rerouted the deliveries and never paid the suppliers. The schemes reportedly ran from August 2024 to August 2025, costing produce companies more than $600,000 in lost goods and transportation.

Canals was arrested and now faces eight federal counts of interstate transport of stolen property — a charge that could bring up to 10 years in prison if he’s convicted. (USA Today)
